The Goth subculture and Halloween have a lot in common, both are associated with dark, spooky, and supernatural concepts. While Halloween (originally Samhain) formerly celebrated the end of the Harvest and people would perform rituals and wear costumes to ward off ghosts once the veil between the underworld and ours thinned, the growing Gothic subculture has brought stories, depth and philosophy into the picture, with reflections about reality, existence, Death and the aftermath, and even more "fantasy topics" like the existential anguish of being cursed (or blessed) with being a vampire or werewolf, the nature of fear and the tragedies of being alive.

This theme uses sober colors and may include motifs that reflect upon these stories, most notably skulls and crosses. This Gothic atmosphere can be achieved by dark rooms, well placed printed curtains, tapestries or pillows, and setting up candles and candelabras, additional props that give an impression of abandonment, or morbidity, such as cobwebs or unusual dark items, as well as removing anything that is too colorful or out of place in this setting.

3. The Monster Mash

Monsters are a classic, scary night-time visitors from the deep, dark past are associated with Halloween because they portray the deepest human fears of existential dread, suffering or violence, reflect our nightmares, and originally at Samhain they were themselves used as motifs to scared the true ghosts and evil spirits!

This style does not have a single color scheme, but is more of an homage to all monsters, or even better, you choose one and then make the whole decoration theme around it and it's story. To name the most famous:

Vampires are cursed (or blessed') to live forever and wander the Earth consuming other's lives, while everyone is familiar with the ones that happily and violently try to make the most of their existence, many suffer from the harm they cause, yet fear death too much to let themselves go, and the fact that they choose to go on torments them.

Werewolves are on a similar situation, but are not even able to make a choice over their actions, who or when they hunt, even fewer may enjoy the lack of control and loneliness that their existence brings.

Zombies go a step further, similarly cursed but permanently trapped inside their rotten bodies, can you imagine being conscious in there? Smelling yourself, feeling the worms crawl and pieces of yourself fall as you consume your best friends? This is why I hate zombies.

Much as wonderful tv series like American Horror Story or Midnight Mass noted, horror is not only about physical violence, but also about mental anguish!

5. Horror in the Snow

When you think of Halloween or horror decorations, white is probably not a color scheme that comes to mind, but you'd be surprised, used in the right way it can give out the most spine-tingling, eerie and unsettling of all looks.

This ethereal color scheme is associated with Death, ghosts and spirits, and it's perfect for creating a haunted house or 'underworld' vibe, and there are plenty of ways to incorporate it into your décor. If you can dress up your home in white as much as possible, while having specific props, blood or prints "come out of the snow or mist" at the key places, you will create one of the most menacing, unique and unforgettable atmospheres.

In addition to art prints for curtains, bedding, pillows and tapestries, you can use white lights to create an eerie glow, drape sheets over furniture to give the vibe of abandonment, and hang spooky props or cobwebs from the ceiling, you can also use white paint or cheap props to create zombie-like hands reaching out from the walls. With a little imagination, you can transform your home into a truly terrifying and delightful space to enjoy during Halloween, or the rest of the year!

This is yet another unusual color scheme for Halloween that used in a imaginative way will make your house the most original of the block! At the core of this theme is witchcraft and magic, although witches come in all moral alignments, the evil ones have haunted the hearts of humanity for centuries.

The chief colors are black and purple, which inspired on the darker spectrum of the Pastel Goth aesthetic and combined with magic and demonic symbols, can give a room an incredibly magical and mysterious look, you can add flashes of orange here and there to bring back some of the classical Halloween look.

To create a truly spooky atmosphere, consider the use of eerie lights, black light, candles, altars and totems. Classic fall themes such as pumpkins, scarecrows, and natural decorations made with wood such as pentagrams, dead branches, or contained fires for the yard are also a natural accompaniment for this theme.
